Sometimes, the most unexpected skills you learn early on end up sticking with you and preparing you for moments way down the line. For me, two simple skills I picked up long ago have been surprisingly valuable throughout my career: typing and using the 10-key.

I learned how to type properly in middle school, thanks to an outstanding teacher who made it stick. Since then, I’ve always been a fast and accurate typist. That skill means I can write quickly, respond to emails without hunting for keys, and stay productive in a fast-paced tech world.

Back in high school, I worked at a grocery store. Part of my job was adding up long lists of money counts, checks, and daily numbers. I had to get fast and accurate on the 10-key calculator. At the time, it just felt like a chore, but fast forward to today—when I’m working with spreadsheets, financial models, and tons of numerical data—being quick and precise on the 10-key saves me a ton of time and mental energy.

Both skills I learned years ago, almost as side lessons, but they’ve carried me through my entire career. It’s a pleasant reminder that sometimes small, unexpected wins can become real superpowers later on.
